The city is influenced by the Gallo-Roman culture and we see great monuments such as the Roman Theater renowned for its acoustic quality and the arch of triumph, one of the best preserved in the world.

In the XII century, the ancients walls of the city were raised and the old “castrum Aurasice” rebuilt under the orders of the daughter of Count Raimbaud of Nice. In modern times, "the old castle" suffered damage due to the wars of religion, is completely reworked. From 1621 to 1624, Maurice de Nassau built a modern fortress.

In retaliation for the attitude of, Prince of Orange and "Stadtholder" of Holland defending the interests of his nation and the Protestant religion, Louis XIV instructed the Count of Grignan in 1672 to put the siege before the citadel and Destroy it. It was necessary to use powder to demolish those enormous walls of which we see today some vestiges on the hill.
